I kind of love writing poetry and today, I think I'm going to start something new. I want to start posting my poetry on here and some things happened today that kind of inspired me to write. So, without further ado!
Why do you lie your head down? (Inspired by the Sandy Hook Promise)
Why do you lie your head down?
I’ve never had a choice.
I was in the car when I heard.
My friend driving me home.
Her sister was in the backseat,
Asking if we’d heard.
I never had a choice to lay my head down
When my father is a teacher and my sister is still in school.
My phone buzzes with a notification everytime
I’m always afraid where it is
Who it is.
I know these systems back and forth
Because I couldn’t not learn
Because it soon became workplaces
Like the one I want
Where people write to continue freeing
And I had to watch
As the bomb threats came in
And I saw a man who came to talk
Who had shoved hatred in the survivor’s face.
How can you lie your head down
While tears come to my eyes
Panic fills my soul
With nothing but fear
Fear for my family
Fear for my children
Fear we might be next.
Please my children,
don’t lie your head down.
I refuse to let you be next.
